You are put into a randomly generated arena, where the goal is to kill a certain number of enemies. Once you do, a door leading to the next arena opens, and you can proceed. The game ends once you've beaten six arenas in a row. The death is permanent, as one would expect from a roguelite. A single playthrough takes about 10—20 minutes, but there are different unlocking mutators (called "skulls") you can set before the game begins and random blessings/curses you get inbetween levels that add to replayability. Random map generation with different weapons and items scattered around helps with that too.The game is challenging, but you've got plenty of options right from the get-go. The starting weapon can be "remixed" into a random one in the first few seconds of a given run, same with any other weapon or item that spawns on a level, given you've got enough of the "remixer crystals" (I think that's the name). You can go with several different weapons, but aren't forced to, spending money on ammo boxes to replenish the ammunition for just-that-one-gun-you-like is also a viable strategy. You can go around a level picking off enemies one by one with a crossbow, or run through it and collect a horde of monsters following you to then dispatch them with a few well placed AoE attacks. It's well thought out.The music is just awesome. With that said, I want to talk about the stuff I didn't enjoy in the 8 hours I've played: - The skulls selection in the main menu isn't persistent, meaning every time you exit to the main menu or relaunch the game they have to be reselected one by one in order to attempt a desired challenge again. Some kind of a lock function would be nice to have, as well as "Select all"/"Deselect all" buttons, something like that - Ammo pickups are bugged and require mashing the key along with constantly readjusting your postition to be picked up - No best runs table and no leaderboards AFAIK - No endless mode with ever-growing challenge, which I'd expect from a game inspired by Nuclear Throne. This actually makes me wonder what there is to do once the game is beaten once with all skulls active. Move along, perhaps? - No option to bind your weapons to specific keys, like it is possible with "Q" and "F" for items - Flamey demon head fire breathing attack seems to be able to pass through obstacles - I did not get the "Blood Soaked" achievement, even though the main menu tells me that I've exceeded the required number of total kills - Stunned enemies appear to still do contact damage, so I did not find a good use for the stun stick, seeing how every swing sends you flying forward right into an enemy you've just stunned. Same goes for the chainsaw. There are only two (maybe three, but that's debatable) types of enemies that can be more or less safely engaged in melee range, and both of those are brittle and require nothing more that the starting knife to kill - Death doesn't feel dangerous enough. I think it's just a bit too slow-moving to pose a real threat. In all my hours of playing I've never been killed by it once I don't think - The main thing is, I suppose, the lack of progress I notice. From what I can see, the game hasn't been updated in about a year, and it doesn't feel rich in content or that close to finished. Every single level looks more or less the same with same blocky buildings and walls comprising the scenery. There are no bosses to fight, and no new enemies to encounter in later levels (once the first skull is active)Even taking all that into account, I'm having a blast playing the game right now, so I can't in good faith not recommend it.That about does it. Thanks for reading.. Arcadey, fast-paced, DOOM like roguelike? Oh boy, count me in!. Another rogue-lite FPS - of course I love it. The world is much too 'open' to compare it to Doom or Quake, but I like that it has its own style. Finding one of the many obscured exits while being chased by a huge skull doesn't feel like it's going to get boring anytime soon.. Another Jim Sterling fanatic here. After seeing him to play this game I finally decided to give it a go and I must say that it was well worth it.The player is thrown into Doom-like environment where they must search for food, gold, weapons, items and ammo while fighting against hordes of monsters. Not only that but you only have about two minutes before Error Sans Death starts chasing you. The exits won't open until you've killed a set amount of enemies so you'll better plan your actions accordingly... or rely on a huge amount of dumb luck to not end up dead. The unique mechanic of the game is a blessing/curse system. At the beginning of each stage you'll get to choose one blessing (or curse) to either aid your battle or hinder it. You can also risk it by rerolling the blessings/curses (at the cost of losing health) or letting the game choose one for you instead. This not only makes the game more challenging but also gives the game plenty of replay value. The blessings/curses can dramatically change the way you play the game so you won't be having identical playthroughs anytime soon.Finding different ways to play the game is fun but the game still has some issues. Some weapons are clearly better than the others (I'm looking at you, Hell's Hand) which means depending on the weapons you find you either blaze through the levels with ease or struggle to finish the first stages of your run. Some blessings/curses can really screw you over without you even noticing. For example, there's a curse that halves the speed of your bullets but it also halves the range of your crossbow. There's a blessing that makes the explosions three times bigger but it also makes kamikaze zombies more likely to hurt you. Learning the pros/cons of each trait will help you plan your runs better, but I still feel like luck plays a huge role in whether you'll succeed or not. (This also applies to finding the right weapons in the stages.)There are also some minor bugs left in the game. There was a time when I ran through an exit that was floating above the ground and I had to time my 3x higher jump to get through it. Once I was smacked by a spike ball before I even got placed on a level and had any time to react. Sometimes it's also hard to tell whether there are enemies chasing you but that mainly happens with the zombies who possess little threat and are easy to dispose. The enemies/levels also lack some variety but the developer has promised that more will be coming soon.Overall, while I have some nitpicks with the game it's still a blast to play. The soundtrack is great and gets you pumped, the game runs without issues (apart from Steam notifications glitching out at times) and seeing the world turn dark when Death appears really fills you with dread. Yes, the game is still in early access but unlike the most "early access games" this one actually feels almoust complete. And unlike the most "early access game "developers"" this one seems to genuinely care about the game and interacting with people without trying to sue the crap out of them. That if anything makes this game stand out from the rest.I paid 5€ for this game and I felt like I got my money's worth during my first run. I'm truly looking forward to seeing what the complete product will be like. Until then, I'm grabbing whatever gun I can find and go running at demon hordes pretending to be on the quest to avenge my pet rabbit.Go buy this game. You won't regret it.. Not bad for 3 euro.. I saw Jim Sterling play this game and decided to buy it. It is a fun little game with a lot of potential. I like the weapon selection, the blessing/curse mechanic, and the soundtrack (although a little repetitive right now). The death chase in the end of each stage is also a nice idea (reminds me of Descent somehow). Looking forward to future updates and eventually the full game, which hopefully will have more content and variation. Some sort of narrative would not be bad either.. Still Not Dead is a minecraft-like FPS (but mostly just Unity asset flips). I got this in a bundle and my card idler bugged out and gave me 35 hours playtime, but if you've ever played any FPS in the last 20 years, the amount of "new" gameplay here is roughly 30 seconds. Effectively an arena survival shooter, you're stuck on what might as well be a procedurally generated map with sprites chasing you. Kill enough of them and then go to an exit to "progress". Bear in mind this game was released in 2018, and the developer wants $10 for it... the gameplay and graphics are worse than Wolfenstein 3D from 1991. A lot of very mediocre games are on Steam, many of them Unity asset flippers, yet Still Not Dead manages to underperform that very low bar... it's truly awful. The only redeeming feature of this "game" is that the $10 price tag might cause a few people to laugh.. game is good controller issues fixed. with the exception of a bug or something that makes your player move backward on their own the game is relatively polished. EASILY worth it if you love the old shootbangs like Doom and Quake. -Weapon and enemy variety is solid. -Blessing/curse system is a fun way to mix it up between rounds.-Fast and hectic.
